Abstract

AIM: To determine the prevalence of presbyopia in the rural communities of Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu state. METHODOLOGY: A population-based cross sectional study was done with cluster random sampling to select eight clusters of 100 participants from each cluster that were 35 years and above. Examination consisted of distance visual acuity measurement with and without pinhole using the standard Snellens chart at six meters. Examination with pen torch and direct ophthalmoscope was carried out. Objective refraction with subjective refinement was done on all patients with visual acuity less than 6/6. Near visual acuity was assessed at 40cm with distance correction in place if required. Spherical plus lenses in increments of 0.25 dioptres were added until the participant was able to read N8. A participant was defined as having presbyopia if the participant was unable to read N8 at 40cm or required an addition of at least +1.00DS to improve near vision to at least N8. 2 Questionnaires were administered and information on willingness to pay for replacement of spectacles, and barriers to the use of spectacles was obtained.
