VISUAL STATUS OF COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLE RIDERS IN ENUGU METROPOLIS, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study was a cross-sectional survey carried out on 615 commercial motorcycle riders (popularly referred to as “Okada” locally) in Enugu metropolis to determine their visual status. The study lasted from June to August 2006. The observed prevalence of sub-normal Visual Acuity (<6 /18- 3 /60) was 1.14% 0.70% (7 motorcyclists). Visual field defect had a prevalence of 2.3% 0.98% while colour vision defect was noted in 16 motorcyclists (2.6% 0.98%). Prevalence of monocular blindness was 1.95%(12 motorcyclists). Colour vision defect had statistically significant association with the occurrence of road traffic accidents( P=0.003). The prevalence of road traffic accident (RTA) in this study was 57.7%(355 riders). Among motorcyclists with subnormal visual acuity, the prevalence of RTA was 1.7%(6 riders). Fifteen (4.2%) motorcyclists with colour vision defect were involved in RTA while only 1( 2.8%) with visual field defect was involved in RTA. The most common cause of accidents was “riders’-related problem” as observed by 227 motorcyclists (39.8%). Topping the list was speeding followed by fatigue, poor riding skills, inattention, drunkenness and violation of traffic regulations in that order. Ingestion of alcohol and other CNS affecting drugs were found to be significantly associated with RTA. (P=0.000). Pingueculum was the commonest ocular disorder and occurred in (269) 25.3% of motorcyclists. This was followed by pterygium in 206(19.3%) motorcyclists. Chronic inflammation was next and occurred in 160 (16.2%) motorcyclists. Pingueculum and pterygium had a statistically significant association with the duration of riding (p = 0.000 and P=0.000 respectively) while the use of riding goggles did not appear to affect their development. The need for enforcement of new and existing traffic laws and regulation in Nigeria is recommended. The importance of periodic programmes on safety and health education are emphasized.
