Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the visual health status of timber market workers in the Calabar metropolis, Nigeria, and determine their ocular morbidity and visual impairment. It was also intended to identify the ophthalmic needs of these workers. A cross-sectional study of 457 workers from 2 timber markets selected at random in Calabar metropolis was carried out over a 3-month period, January to March 2008. Demographic data, history of eye diseases, knowledge and utilization of ophthalmic services, history of eye injuries at worksite as well as ophthalmic examinations were obtained and recorded. The common eye disorders seen were presbyopia 198(21.6%), refractive errors 180(19.7%), pteryguim 139(15.2%), pingueculum 65(7.1%), and allergic conjunctivitis 64(7.0%). Prevalence of eye injuries at worksite was 29(6.3%). Twenty two (4.8%) workers had visual impairment of VA < 6/18 to 6/60 in which refractive errors 12(54.6%), glaucoma 6(27.3%) and cataract 3(13.4%) were the major causes. It was discovered that ignorance was the greatest barrier to uptake of available eye care services. It is recommended that effective eye health education through the Timber Market Workers Association (TMWA) which is already on ground can be used to improve eye health education in this community.
