Abstract

Aim: To assess the visual function and health related quality of life of Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) patients attending ophthalmic centers in Abuja with a view to adopt a paradigm shift to a holistic approach to glaucoma management. Method: A case control study carried out among 106 Primary Open Angle Glaucoma patients and 106 age-sex matched controls (non POAG patients that have no visiual impairing ocular disorder ) attending Asokoro District Hospital, Abuja and Eye Foundation Hospital Abuja from 1st of Nov 2012 (Thursday) to 30th of April 2013 (Tuesday) .POAG was defined as patients with open anterior chamber angles based on gonioscopy, pale and cupped discs ( cup : disc ratio ≥ 0.4), corresponding visual field defects with or without an elevated intra ocular pressure. The objective measures of visual function assessed include: visual acuity, central visual field, Pelli Robson’s contrast sensitivity and City Online University color vision test. In addition, health related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using generic and disease related measures which included National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEIVFQ 25), Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS), Center for Epidemiological studies on depression (CESD) and a Co Morbidity Score (CMS). Data was analyzed using SPSS Version 20 using Chi-square, Independent student T test, Analysis of variance, Spearman Rho Correlation, Logistic regression and univariate and multivariate linear regression.
