Abstract

Statement of the Problem Glaucoma is a chronic disease of public health importance in Nigeria and more so in the South East. There is current global interest on quality of life, but in Nigeria there is paucity of data on Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and its impact on quality of life. Aim To determine the visual function and quality of life in patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma seen at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku -Ozalla, Enugu, Nigeria. Study subjects There were one hundred and fourteen previously diagnosed POAG patients attending the UNTH eye clinic. Methods One hundred and fourteen, previously diagnosed POAG patients were consecutively recruited. They underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examination including LogMAR Visual Acuity; slit lamp examination of the anterior and posterior segments; applanation tonometry; gonioscopy; Pelli Robson Contrast Sensitivity and City University Colour vision tests. Vision related quality of life was assessed using an interviewer administered 25 item National Eye Institute Vision Function Questionnaire. SPSS V 20 was employed in all data analyses, including univariate, correlation and regression.
