Aim and objectives 2012 PROF S.N.N NWOSU DR O.T EDEMA The aim of the study was to determine knowledge of and frequency/factors affecting utilization of protective eye devices and its influence on ocular disorders among artisans in Owerri, Nigeria. Materials and methods This descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out from February to March 2012. A structured questionnaire seeking information on bio-data, (or vital statistics) occupation, marital status, educational history, work history and duration in the profession. Ocular history which included symptoms, history of work related ocular injuries, knowledge of protective eye devices, types of protective eye devices, utilization of protective eye devices, reasons for its non-utilization was administered to the artisans. Ocular examinations included anterior segment with a pen torch and a potable slit lamp. Posterior segment with direct ophthalmoscope, while refraction was carried out for artisans with visual acuity less than 6/6.
