Aim: To assess the utilization of cataract surgical services among adults presenting at the eye clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria with a view to determining the acceptability, reasons for non acceptance, factors affecting the uptake or acceptance of cataract surgical services as well as make recommendations on ways of improving the utilization of cataract surgical services. Methods: This is a hospital based descriptive study on the utilization of cataract surgical services among adults aged 40 years and above presenting at the eye clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State between October 2nd 2013 and January 2nd, 2014. Four hundred adults aged 40 years and above who met the inclusion criteria were interviewed using interviewer administered questionnaire. Ocular examination performed on all participants included visual acuities, anterior and posterior segments examinations. Light projection as well as colour discrimination assessment was done in patients with dense cataract in which the fundi could not be visualized even with pupillary dilatation. Data obtained was analysed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20.
