Abstract

Background Surgeons usually create wounds that have to be closed. Different skin closure materials are currently available with varying properties. The type of material and method used can affect the speed of closure and wound complication rate including the final cosmetic outcome. Although nylon suture is commonly used for skin closure, the use of skin stapling devices has the advantage of rapid closure thereby reducing duration of surgery. Aim and objectives To compare nylon sutures and skin staples for closure of abdominal wounds in terms of speed of closure, post operative pain, surgical site infection rate, and quality of scar. Methodology This was a prospective study which included 80 participants who had abdominal surgeries between January 2017 and March 2018. Forty patients had their wounds closed with nylon sutures while the remaining 40 had theirs closed with skin staplers. The rates of wound closure for the two methods of closure were determined and compared. The postoperative pain was scored using VAS on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th postoperative days and compared. The post operative surgical site infection rates and quality of scar were also compared.
