Abstract

impairment (SVI) in Potiskum local government area using the key informant method. Materials and Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey was carried out in Potiskum Local Government Area, Yobe state between May and June, 2011. Fifty key informants were selected and trained on how to identify blind / SVI children. They assessed the visual acuities of children suspected to be blind or having SVI at home using Snellen’s “E” charts and picture charts. All children with visual acuities less than 6/60 and pre-verbal children suspected to be blind were referred to specified centres for further examination by the investigator. Demographic data, historical and examination findings were recorded in a modified WHO / PBL form for childhood blindness. Causes of blindness were identified and prevalence of blindness estimated. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 16.
