Background: The problem of preterm birth continues to be one of the most important challenges in obstetrics. It is a common cause of neonatal mortality and severe morbidities mainly due to associated low birth weight and deficiency of lung sulfactant. The use of identifiable risk factors to predict preterm labour is often vague and non-specific. Fetal fibronectin, a basement membrane glycoprotein is advocated in the management of women presenting with threatened preterm labour, but is under utilised in Nigeria. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the role of cervico-vaginal fetal fibronectin (FFN) testing as a predictor of preterm labour among symptomatic pregnant women in Lagos Nigeria. Study site: This study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos Island, Lagos State. Study design: A prospective cohort study Method: Cervico-vaginal secretions were obtain from One hundred and seventy nine pregnant women presenting with sign and/or symptoms of preterm labour between 28 weeks and before 36 weeks. The secretions were tested for fetal fibronctin using a rapid test kit and patients were then followed up till delivery.
