OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, presentation pattern and the relationship between dry eyes and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with Diabetes Mellitus so as to quantify the burden of dry eye disease among them with a view to enable early diagnosis and institution of prompt treatment towards improved quality of life. METHODS: This is a descriptive hospital based study conducted between December 2014 and January 2015. Consecutive respondents diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus in the Ophthalmology and Diabetic Clinics of the University College Hospital Ibadan who met the inclusion criteria were recruited into the study until the sample size was achieved. Standardized questionnaires were administered to the eligible respondents on symptoms of dry eye using the Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaire, followed by Ocular examination to elicit signs of dry eye by determining the tear break up time (TBUT) and Schirmer’s I test and obtaining recent results of glycosylated haemoglobin value within the week of examination from the patients. Dry eye was diagnosed with a score of ≥ 13 with a maximum of 100 using the Ocular Surface Disease Index Score. Scores of 0 – 12 were taken as normal. Data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 and level of Statistical significance was set at 5%.
