Abstract

Background: Studies have shown that an association exists between obesity and breast cancer in women. This association may be affected by race and menopausal status of the women. Most of the studies have been in Caucasians and African Americans with few indigenous studies. Aim of Study: This study assessed the relationship between obesity (using Body Mass Index and Waist Hip ratio) and the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal and postmenopausal women at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin. Methods: Between January 2017 and August 2017, 35 consecutive women with incident cases of breast cancer were recruited and compared with age matched controls. Data on the clinical and epidemiological characteristics were collected using interviewer administered structured questions. Anthropometric measurements was taken at same sitting. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. Results: A total number of 70 patients were recruited for this study; 35 women with recently diagnosed breast cancer were compared with an equal number of age matched controls. The peak age incidence of breast cancer in the sample studied was 51.6 years. More than half of the patients in both group of respondents had attained tertiary level of education (subjects =18, controls=19). The most common ethnic group for both subjects and control were Bini (subjects=19, controls=15). Thirty three of the subjects and 32 patients in the control arm were married. The study did not find any significant association between obesity and breast cancer in both premenopausal women (OR=1.41, 95% CI= 0.30-6.69) and postmenopausal women (OR=1.24, 95%CI=0.43-3.57). There was also no significant association found between WHR and breast cancer in both premenopausal women (OR=12.79, 95%CI=0.01-1.21) and postmenopausal women (OR=1.48, 95%CI=0.44-4.96). Conclusion: There was no significant association between obesity (body mass index and waist hip ratio) and breast cancer as obtained in other indigenous studies.
