Abstract

BACKGROUND Depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate is a long acting reversible contraceptive. It’s a highly effective contraceptive with failure rate of 0.1-2 pregnancy per women year. Alterations in lipid profile have been reported by various studies but results are inconsistent. Nevertheless, adverse lipid profile relationship is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease AIM The aim of this study is to determine the effects of use of DMPA on the lipid profile OBJECTIVES To compare the lipid profile of DMPA users at three months and six months to pretreatment serum concentration. To evaluate the association between lipid profiles, change in body weight and body mass index and duration of use of DMPA. RESEARCH METHODS: This was a prospective longititudinal study involving new acceptors of DMPA. Sixty eight DMPA users were recruited consecutively until the sample size was reached. Blood samples for assay of lipid profile was collected at commencement of DMPA, and then at 3 months and 6 months. The relationships of the lipid profile parameter and the duration of use were also determined. ii DATA ANALYSIS All the information obtained from the questionnaire and data from the assay were entered into a computer and analyzed using the statistical package for social science for window software version 21.
