Active management of labour reduces number of prolonged labour without having adverse effects on the mother or fetus. Methods: The study was a prospective double blinded randomized study which was carried out over a period of 8 months. One hundred and twenty patients in active phase of labour at term at FMC Katsina were recruited and randomly assigned into two groups and were administered either hyoscine butylbromide or placebo to compare the duration of labour in both groups. Outcome measures included duration of first, second and third stages of labour, fetomaternal vital signs, maternal side effects, APGAR scores and NICU admission.
