Abstract

Social media has become ubiquitous. Its interactive nature and ease of use in the comfort of one’s home has made this particularly so. Social media usage has numerous benefits to the individual, educational, entertainment, communication and health. Non beneficial effects such as cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate contents, depression and academic under achievement can adversely affect the individual psychosocial health. This study was carried out to look at the usage of social media and its relationship with some socio-demographic factors, psychosocial wellbeing, academic performance as well as internet addiction among secondary school students in Ilorin. The study was descriptive, cross sectional, schoolbased study involving 630 secondary school students aged 11-17 years in Ilorin, Kwara state. The students were recruited through multistage random sampling technique from 15 secondary schools in the three (3) LGA in Ilorin. Respondents were stratified into those with limited and unlimited access to the internet based on the location of their respective schools in rural and urban communities respectively. Semistructured questionnaires were used to assess socio-demographic characteristics and internet use. Structured questionnaires were used to assess psychosocial wellbeing and internet addiction of respondents. Academic performance of senior secondary class students was assessed using the junior secondary certificate examination. Data analysis was done using the statistical package for social sciences (IBM-SPSS) version 20.0.
