Skin disorders among primary school children are common in many countries, with a variable spectrum. They can constitute major health problems, resulting in considerable discomfort, parental anxiety and embarrassment to the child. Determining the risk factors and the source of treatment of skin diseases, will enhance a better understanding of skin health and prevention of skin diseases in primary school children. This descriptive cross sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence and pattern of skin diseases among primary school children in Umuahia South Local Government Area as well as the associated risk factors for their occurrence. It was also aimed at identifying the source of accessing health care and the factors influencing health care seeking behavior of the parents/ guardians of children with these skin diseases. Sociodemographic data were obtained with a structured questionnaire and clinical examination was done. Diagnosis of skin disorder was mainly clinical but where indicated, laboratory investigations such as culture of skin scrapping and smears, potassium hydroxide tests and skin biopsy were carried out. Data analysis was done using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 20 currently known as IBM SPSS statistics. A total of 1560 children aged 5 to 15 years were consecutively recruited from their various primary schools, over a 4 month period from December 2016 to March 2017. Eight hundred and forty seven (847) and 713 subjects were recruited from public and private schools respectively.
