Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia continues to be a leading cause of both morbidity and mortality to the mother and fetuses. Early prediction and diagnosis is useful to reduce the adverse effects of the condition on the mothers, fetuses and neonates. Objectives: To investigate the clinical utility of early second trimester maternal serum lipid profile as a predictive test for preeclampsia. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study involving 100 pregnant women between the gestational ages of 14-20 weeks, carried out at the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Federal Medical Center Owerri, Imo State. Maternal blood samples were collected for serum lipid profile concentration and the women were followed up in the antenatal clinic to delivery for the development of preeclampsia.
