Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia remains a major problem of modern obstetrics and the aetiology remains poorly understood. A number of theories have been put forward where different biochemical markers have been implicated in the causal association of preeclampsia. The role of serum β- hCG in predicting this disorder have been studied. However, no consensus on its predictive potential has been reached. Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the correlation of serum β-hCG level and preeclampsia and evaluate its usefulness as a predictive test for patients attending antenatal clinic in University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Methods: This study was carried out among 125 normotensive pregnant women with risk factor(s) of developing preeclampsia attending antenatal clinic in UITH, Ilorin. This study was a hospital based longitudinal study and patient selection was by non-probability sampling method based on set inclusion and exclusion criteria. A structured questionnaire was designed to obtain their socio-demographic data, and findings on physical examination, and urinalysis were recorded. Their serum β-hCG samples at 14-20 weeks gestation were taken, assayed and recorded. They were then followed up clinically till delivery for development of preeclampsia or otherwise and correlated with serum β- hCG .
