Abstract

Background: Cytomegalovirus infection is a potentially neurotoxic disease leading to mental retardation, congenital deafness, and damage to the fetus when acquired during pregnancy. Other consequences of Cytomegalovirus infection include hepatomegaly, chorioretinitis, hepatitis, thrombocytopenia, pneumonia, microcephaly, optic atrophy and microphthalmia. Objectives: To determine the seroprevalence of Cytomegalovirus antibodies in pregnant women in Ebonyi state university teaching hospital Abakaliki and to determine the relationship between Cytomegalovirus seroprevalence and their socio-demographic characteristics. Methods: This was a laboratory-based cross sectional descriptive study. Two hundred and four (204) serum samples were analysed for the presence of Cytomegalovirus antibodies using ELISA techniques. The relationships between positive CMV antibodies and socio-demographic variables were analysed using Chisquare test and multiple logistic regression analysis.
