Abstract

AIM: To determine the epidemiology of various ocular disorders among secondary school students in Yagba-West Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in March 2005. Stratified random sampling method was employed to select 1,685 participants into the study from every arm of all the classes in the 16 secondary schools in Yagba-West Local Government Area. Visual acuity was done in the open air using the Snellen’s Chart. The external eye was examined with a bright Pen torch and fundoscopy was performed with the aid of a Heine Ophthalmoscope in a darkened room. Non-cycloplegic refraction was done for those with visual acuity of 6/9 or less in the worse eye. Results were analysed using epi info 6.
