Abstract

Aim: To determine the average RNFL thickness in normal Hausa/Fulani children aged 6 to 15 years using Stratus OCT, for the purposes of aiding diagnosis of and monitoring progression of glaucoma in this population. Subjects and methods: Using a two-staged random cluster sampling technique, four hundred and twenty-two (422) normal subjects aged 6 to 15 years, who met the inclusion criteria, were selected from schools in two local governments in Kano metropolis. They underwent visual acuity testing (Snellen’s), anterior and posterior segment examination, RNFL thickness and vertical cup: disc ratio measurements (Stratus OCT),axial length measurements (IOLMaster), and cycloplegic refraction in both eyes. The influence of gender, laterality, age, axial length, vertical cup: disc ratio, and refraction was evaluated on the RNFL thickness.
