Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship between intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness and systemic blood pressure as a justification for recommending routine measurement of central corneal thickness and blood pressure in the eye clinic of Federal Medical Center, Owerri, Imo state. METHODS: The study was a hospital – based, cross – sectional, analytical study conducted on non-glaucomatous participants aged 18 years and above in the eye clinic of Federal Medical Center, Owerri from October 2015 to July 2016. All participants filled informed consent forms. A convenience, non-probability sampling method was used to recruit eligible participants for the study. All participants underwent a standard procedure involving visual acuity assessment (distance and near), intraocular pressure measurement by applanation using the Goldmann applanation tonometer done between 8am and 12noon, central corneal thickness by ultrasound pachymetry, blood pressure measurement using digital sphygmomanometer, with anterior and posterior segment examinations.
