In the second stage, one secondary school was randomly selected from each ward. In the third stage, 20 students were selected from each class from junior secondary school one to senior secondary school three giving a total of 120 students per school. Simple random sampling was used at each stage. A questionnaire was used to record information on name, age, sex, class, visual symptoms, previous spectacle use and amount patient is willing to pay for spectacles. Visual acuity was tested at 6 meters with illiterate E chart both unaided and with a pinhole and this was recorded. Those with visual acuity ≤ 6/12 and without any other ocular pathology were given prescription for spectacles and assessed after two months to confirm whether they bought spectacles or not and the barriers to spectacle purchase were noted.
