Abstract

A population based rapid assessment of cataract blindness was conducted in Ojo local government area (LGA) of Lagos state, over 6 weeks from March to April 2007. Aim: The aim of the study was to rapidly assess the cataract surgical services in the local government, with a view to evaluating the impact of the Lagos State Blindness Prevention Programme, in the community. Methodology: A cross sectional sample of subjects aged 50 years and above were selected, using a systematic cluster random sampling technique. A cluster each of 50 people was selected, through a door to door survey, to achieve the required sample size. A total of 32 clusters were registered. Ocular examination was done using a pen torch and Keeler ophthalmoscope, and data collected onto a specially designed questionnaire for rapid assessment of cataract surgical services Data analysis was done using the RACSS software.
