Overweight and obesity are terms used to describe ranges of weight considered unhealthy for a given height. They are more precisely defined by the National Institute of Health as BMI percentile of 85th-94th and ≥ 95th percentile respectively. Obesity has been documented as a major risk factor for the development of various medical conditions among adolescents such as hypertension diabetes mellitus and obstructive sleep apnea. It has also been found to be associated with short term psychosocial disorders like anxiety, depression and low self-esteem possibly due to peer rejection due to their size and shape. Adolescence is a period of rapid social, psychological and biological transition into adulthood characterized by increased awareness of body shape and need for identity formation and peer acceptance. This period is prone to increased risk of psychosocial disorder among adolescents with delay in treatment leading to impairment in social interaction and academic performance. Psychosocial disorders and obesity are a huge burden to the paediatric population hence need for this study. This is a cross-sectional study carried out among obese adolescents attending secondary schools in Enugu metropolis. Appropriate sample size formula was used and 74 obese adolescents who met the inclusion criteria were studied for psychosocial disorders compared to age and sex matched normal weight adolescents. Data for psychosocial disorders was collected using the Pediatric symptom checklist-youth version (YPSC) and Zung depression Scale (ZDS). The overall score of the YPSC was arrived at by summing up the individual scores of each item, with a possible range of score of 0-70. Score of ≥ 30 is suggestive of psychosocial disorder.
