Abstract

Diarrhoeal disease is responsible for 16% of illnesses in under five children and leads to considerable illness and death especially among those infected by HIV. Up to 21% of all mortality in under five children in low and middle income countries is attributed to diarrhoea. A study in Kano State, Nigeria showed that 59% of children with HIV infection presented with diarrhoea. As at the year 2016, Nigeria had the second highest burden of HIV worldwide. In 1990, the WHO reported that intestinal parasites have plagued 3.5 billion people globally, with about 450 million children affected and are ill as a result of these parasites. In Nigeria, 40-70% of both children and adults were reported to have intestinal parasites. In Kano State, a study conducted at Wudil Local Government Area (LGA) among HIV positive individuals reported a 58% prevalence rate of intestinal parasites infection. Nigeria accounted for the highest number of children infected with HIV in the world in 2012. HIV and IPI cause significant illness and deaths in LMICs. This study is relevant to the field of paediatrics because it adds to the existing body of knowledge and the results will provide a guide to the empirical management of diarrhoeal diseases in HIV infected children in this environment. This study aimed to ascertain the prevalence of intestinal parasites infection (IPI) in HIV infected children with diarrhoea aged 6 months to 15 years seen at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria.
