Abstract

Pharyngotonsillitis occurs worldwide, accounting for 33% of upper respiratory tract infection. Although the most common aetiology is viral, bacteria pathogens have been implicated. Pharyngotonsillitis caused by bacteria is of clinical importance because of its ability to cause suppurative complications such as peritonsillar abscess, neck abscess and pharyngeal abscess and non-suppurative complications such as rheumatic fever and post streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
