Abstract

BACKGROUND: Thyroid disorders are amongst the commonest endocrine disorder in women of child bearing age and are commonly encountered in pregnancy. Thyroid disorders in pregnancy include subclinical hypothyroidism, overt hypothyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism, overt hyperthyroidism and postpartum thyroid disease. OBJECTIVE: The study was carried out to find out the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction and the types of thyroid dysfunction amongst normal pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic in JUTH and, to investigate risk factors associated with thyroid dysfunction amongst pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic at Jos University Teaching Hospital DESIGN: Comparative Cross sectional study METHODOLOGY: In this study, 80 healthy pregnant women in the first, second and third trimesters were randomly selected and 80 healthy, age- matched, non pregnant women used as control. Thyroid function tests were carried out by measuring serum levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxin (FT4), and freeTri-iodo-thyronine (FT3) by commercially available radio immunoassay Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbesnt Assay (ELISA) kits. Subjects were recruited from JUTH antenatal clinic. Data was analyzed using student’s t test, chi square and odds ratio.
