Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to ascertain if there was any correlation between plasma levels of fibrinogen and C-reactive protein and the severity of pre-eclampsia. Study design: This was a case-control study conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Lagos. Two hundred (200) pregnant women, all of whom were in their third trimester of pregnancy (between 28 and 40 weeks gestational age), were recruited for this study. This comprised 100 healthy pregnant women and 100 pre-eclamptic women. Their mean arterial blood pressure was used as an indicator of the severity of the disease, with a cut off of 125mmHg. Their erythrocyte sedimentation rate, plasma fibrinogen and C-reactive protein levels were assayed. All data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using Epi Info.
