Abstract

Background Caesarean section is one of the common obstetric operations performed worldwide. With the dramatic rise in the rate of caesarean deliveries in the last two decades, post-operative pain management of these patients has become a major medical challenge. Women who deliver by caesarean section experience pain in the immediate postpartum period due to incisional and inflammatory pain, and visceral cramping. Post-operative pain leads to patient discomfort, decreased level of satisfaction, prolonged recovery, and higher health costs. Acute pain control therefore improves the overall quality of life in patients undergoing caesarean section. Pain relief is a fundamental human right, but there is no gold standard for post-caesarean section pain management. Pentazocine and diclofenac are frequently used for multimodal post-operative pain management in Nigeria. Tramadol is another opioid option which is less frequently used particularly at the Central Hospital, Warri.
