Background: Preeclampsia is the commonest hypertensive disorder of pregnancy which is responsible for a significant maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality particularly in the developing world like Nigeria. Platelet activation is central to this disease entity. Therefore, platelet indices may be routinely measured to assess the severity of the disease and pregnancy outcome. Aim: This study compared the platelet indices in normotensive pregnant women and those with preeclampsia at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin. Methods: Study design was prospective case control, comparing platelet indices and pregnancy outcomes among preeclamptics and normotensive pregnant women at department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UITH, Ilorin, Nigeria. The study population comprised of women with preeclampsia and normotensive women (controls) at 28weeks gestational age and above. Pregnant women with other complications were excluded. Sampling technique was purposive. Cases and controls were recruited consecutively and matched for gestational age and gravidity. Platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width and platelet large cell ratio were analyzed and compared with measures of maternal and fetal outcomes.
