Abstract

Background: Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia are multisystemic disorders specific to human pregnancy and associated with a high fetal and maternal morbidities and mortality when it is complicated by haematological abnormalities. The prognosis is better when the haematological abnormality is detected early and appropriate interventions instituted before it manifest clinically in the patient. Cost effective and easily available laboratory investigations that can effectively predicts coagulopathy will improve the maternal and foetal outcome in patients with severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Objectives: To determine the platelet count that predicts coagulopathy in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. Method: It is a prospective self controlled study conducted in the Emergency room, Labour Ward and the Antenatal Clinic of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Blood samples were taken for coagulation studies including platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and plasma fibrinogen, from patients with the diagnosis of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. A total number of 90 patients with clinical features of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia were recruited into the study. Those with platelet count of less than 100,000/ml serve as the study population, while those with platelet count of 100,000/ml and above serve as the control group. ii Analyses of the blood samples were carried out in Haematology Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State. Abnormal coagulation parameters were analysed and compared between the subjects and controls.
