Abstract

Introduction:Post caesarean section pain is complex in nature and results in patient discomfort, prolonged recovery, a higher cost of health care delivery and reduced level of patient’s satisfaction. Effective management of post caesarean section pain will improve overall quality of life. There is presently no gold standard in post caesarean section pain management. Aim: This study was aimed at comparing the efficacy of intramuscular (I.M) Paracetamol and Tramadol with intramuscular (I.M) Paracetamol and Pentazocine in management of post caesarean section pain. The primary outcome measure was the control of post-operative pain and secondary outcome measures were the patient’s satisfaction, maternal and neonatal adverse effects. Methodology:The study population included all women (both booked and unbooked) who just had Caesarean delivery at Lautech Teaching Hospital (LTH) Ogbomoso.Recruitment of the study population was done at the antenatal clinic and labour ward. The study drugs were I.MParacetamol, Pentazocine and Tramadol given to patients 30 minutes after delivery. The instrument of survey was a Proforma and data was collected after consented participants have been randomized into the study groups using computer generated numbers. Analysis wasdone with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22
