Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the aetiology, visual outcome, demographic characteristics and changing trends in the clinical characteristics of Red Eyes in Lagos. STUDY DESIGN: This is a one year prospective longitudinal convenient study from May 2003 to April 2004. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Consecutive new patient that presented at the Eye Clinic of General Hospital Lagos, with red eye was included in the study and also referrals from the Accident and Emergency unit of the Hospital and children from Massey Street Children Hospital. Biodata of all patients with red eyes were obtained. Ocular examinations were carried out using Snellen’s Chart, Picture Chart, Near Chart, Pen Torch light, Heine Direct ophthalmoscope, Slit-lamp Biomicroscope and intraocular pressure measured with Perkins Hand Held tonometer. The data was cleaned, coded, entered, and analysed using EPI-info 2002 (version 6) software.
