Abstract

OBJECTIVE To describe the pattern of ocular disorders in confirmed adult HIV/AIDS patients attending PEPFAR clinic at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study is a cross sectional hospital based study done between February and March 2008. Consecutive adult HIV positive patients of PEPFAR clinic LUTH who met the inclusion criteria were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Visual acuity measurement, external eye examination, adnexal examination and anterior segment examination were done. Intraocular pressure measurement and fundal examination were done (direct and indirect). Ocular motility tests and confrontational visual field assessments were also done. Information obtained from patient’s records included CD4+ T lymphocyte counts, viral load levels and pack cell volume (PCV). EPI-INFO version 6.04b was used in analyzing data obtained. Various statistical methods such as Chi square and t-test were used to determine statistical association of observed differences between proportion and means of groups respectively. Odds ratio was also done to determine relationship between exposure and disease.
