Aim: To determine the pattern of ocular disorders and visual challenges facing ‘Persons with Albinism’ (PWA) in Port Harcourt, Nigeria and its burden on their quality of life. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional population-based study was conducted over a five-month period on 116 persons with albinism in Port Harcourt. Objective measures used to assess visual function were ETDRS visual acuity and Pelli Robson contrast sensitivity tests. Psychometric questionnaires used to assess the quality of life and functional visual status were the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) in those 18 years and older, and the 23-item LV Prasad Functional Vision Questionnaire (LVP-FVQ II) in those less than 18years. A comprehensive eye examination was also carried out to determine other ocular disorders. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22 and Chi square, Independent sample T test, Paired sample test, one-way ANOVA and Spearman correlation were the statistical tools. A p value ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
