Abstract

Purpose: To determine the pattern of diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus at Asokoro District Hospital Abuja Nigeria. It aimed at providing data for advocacy and planning of a large scale screening for diabetic retinopathy in Nigeria. Methods: All consecutive diabetic patients seen at the Diabetic Clinic, Asokoro District Hospital FCT Abuja Nigeria, between February and June 2012 were the subjects of the study. Diabetes was defined as a fasting plasma glucose level of ≥6.4mmol/L on at least two occasions. The risk factors for diabetic retinopathy were measured using interviewer-administered structured questionnaire, clinical assessments, or laboratory tests. All participants underwent ophthalmic examinations, such as visual acuity test, external eye examination, tonometry, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, slit lamp fundus examination with +78D non-contact lens and retinal photographs obtained with digital fundus camera. These images were graded for the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy using the modified Airlie House classification system.
