Abstract

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: Todetermine the pattern and visual outcomes of ocular trauma at the National Eye Centre Kaduna, Nigeria. MATERIALSANDMETHODS: This was a hospital-based prospective observational study of patients with ocular injuries at the National Eye Centre Kaduna. The study instrument was a pre-tested proforma specially designed for the study. All patients had a detailed eye examination (visual acuity, slit lamp examination and B-scan) at presentation, 3 months and 6 months after presentation. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0 statistical package. RESULT: A total of 4568 patients were seen over the study period, 79 (1.73%) of which had ocular trauma. The age range was 6 – 60 years; mean - 21.2 (±12.6) years. Fifty eight (73.4%) patients were males (M: F = 2.8:1). Twenty five patients (31.6%) presented to hospital within 24 hours of sustaining the injury. The right eye was involved in 40(50.6%) patients. Thirty seven (46.8%) injuries occurred at home, making it the commonest location where injuries occurred. There were 52 (65.8%) cases of close globe injuries. The most frequent object/mechanism of injury was wood, causing injuries in 22 (27.8%) eyes. Thirty eight patients (48.7%) were blind at presentation, while 18 (23.1%) presented with a visual acuity of 6/12 or better in the affected eye(s). The final best corrected visual acuity at 6 months was 6/12 or better in 41 (51.9%) of the patients. There was also a significant association between ocular trauma score at presentation and visual acuity at 6 months (p<0.001).
