Abstract

Aim: This study is aimed at assessing the outcome of cataract surgeries, the major causes of poor outcome and suggests strategies to improve future outcome in adults in the eye unit of Gambo Sawaba General Hospital Zaria. Method: A prospective, observational hospital based study of 440 patients (553 eyes) aged 40 years and above, on whom extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intra-ocular lens (ECCE + PC IOL) implantation was carried out. Visual Functioning/Quality of Life (VF/QOL) questionnaires were administered before and 8 weeks after cataract surgery on all the patients operated on between 1st June 2007 and 31st March, 2008.
