AIM The aim of this study was to describe Human Immune deficiency Virus (HIV) – related ophthalmic disease in patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in order to obtain data which can be used to develop effective management protocol in Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital/President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (ABUTH/PEPFAR) clinic, Shika – Zaria with a view to preventing vision threatening complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional hospital based study of adult HIV patients receiving HAART at the ABUTH/PEPFAR clinic, Shika – Zaria was carried out between July and December 2010. Consecutive patients who met the inclusion criteria during the study period were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Visual acuity assessment was done using Snellen and illiterate E – charts. Examination of the face, and pupillary reaction were done with a pen torch while anterior segment examination was done using a slit lamp biomicroscope. Funduscopy was done using Keeler direct and/or indirect ophthalmoscopes. Ocular motility tests and confrontational visual field assessments were done. Intraocular pressure measurement was done using Perkins applanation tonometer. CD4 counts and packed cell volume were obtained from patients’ records. Analysis of data was done using SPSS version 17. Various statistical methods such as, chi – square test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to investigate association and trends between variables. The level of significance was P< 0.05.
