Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The study was carried out to determine ophthalmic findings and identify socio-demographic variables associated with ophthalmic manifestations among persons with diabetes attending the diabetes clinic and ophthalmic clinic of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (U.N.T.H) Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, Nigeria and with a view to generating data which will aid planning of eye care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, hospital-based study in which a total of 189 consecutive consenting adult patients with diabetes aged 18 years and above were assessed for ophthalmic findings over a six-month period. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of U.N.T.H, Enugu. Assessment was done using a structured interviewer-administered proforma. All the participants had visual acuity, tonometry, anterior segment examination and dilated fundus examination with the aid of slit-lamp biomicroscopy and +78D non-contact lens, complimented with binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and digital fundus photography. Data were collated and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software for Windows, version 18.0. Frequency distribution tables and charts were used to present results. Statistical testing of significance was done using the student t-test and Chi-square testing. All p- values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
