Abstract

Objective To describe the hospital incidence and pattern of ocular manifestations of Human Immunodeficiency Virus among adult patients on Highly Active Anti Retroviral Therapy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. Materials and Methods This was a hospital-based study which lasted four weeks. Adult HIV-positive patients were selected by systematic random sampling. Interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to obtain the following information from each patient: socio-demographic data, ocular and medical history. Ocular examination included visual acuity, anterior segment examination, refraction and direct ophthalmoscopy. The CD4+ count and the World Health Organisation clinical staging of Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome for each patient were also documented. The data obtained were analysed.
