AIM: To determine the pattern of ocular perfusion pressures in adults over 40 years in Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos State with a view to assessing its role as a risk factor for primary open angle glaucoma. STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive, cross sectional population-based study. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multi stage sampling method was used to select 267 respondents from Mushin Local Government Area into this study. Participants underwent administration of a semi structured questionnaire after signing an informed written consent form. A general examination, systemic and ocular examination including a slit lamp examination with a +78D lens was done for all the participants. Anthropometric indices including the weight, height and body mass index were recorded. The mean ocular perfusion pressure was defined as 2/3(mean arterial pressure – intraocular pressure), mean arterial pressure being diastolic blood pressure + 1/3(systolic blood pressure – diastolic blood pressure). The diastolic perfusion pressure was defined as diastolic blood pressure – intraocular pressure. Data was analyzed using EPI INFO 7.0.9.7 software. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant.
