Abstract

AIM To determine the ocular health status of internally displaced persons residing at a camp for internally displaced persons in Uhogua community in Ovia North- East L.G.A, Edo State with the aim of improving eye care services to them and make recommendations to policy makers and other relevant bodies in order to achieve this. METHODS This camp- based, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out between July and October 2020, among internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had been residing at the camp for six months or more. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics and Research Committee of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Written informed consent was obtained from all adult respondents and assent from parents or caregivers of children. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select eligible participants for the study. Two interviewer- administered questionnaires were used for this study; a clinical questionnaire and the National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25). Demographic, ocular and general medical information and ocular examination were documented in the clinical questionnaire. The Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ-25) was used to assess the visual function of subjects who required some form of intervention. The effect of eye care on the visual function and quality of life of internally displaced persons was assessed with the VFQ 25 pre- intervention (before commencement of treatment with medications or spectacle use) and post-intervention at 6 weeks. The visual acuity of subjects who had some form of intervention, was also re- assessed 6 weeks post-intervention and the best corrected visual acuity was compared with presenting visual acuity (pre- intervention) to assess the outcome of eye care they had received. Participants were re-evaluated with the clinical xiii questionnaire to know if the ocular symptom(s) they had was the same, reduced or absent after intervention was carried out. Those who required further evaluation were referred to the Eye clinic in University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH). Data analysis was done using International Business Machine, Statistical Package for Scientific Solutions (IBM - SPSS) software version 21. Descriptive analysis was done using frequencies, mean and standard deviation. Chi square test was used to test associations and Fisher’s exact test was used when necessary. The level of statistical significance of each test was set at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval.
