Abstract

Background: Vision survey remains a useful tool for eye care needs assessment and common eye problems exist that are asymptomatic and visually threatening. Also, an individual’s awareness and knowledge of common eye diseases will influence his/her ocular health seeking behavior. It therefore means that improved ocular health seeking behavior/practice occurs as a result of adequate awareness and appropriate knowledge of common eye problems or diseases in the individual’s environment. Health workers as individuals within the community can be useful in providing awareness and knowledge of common ocular problems within their community, thus promoting preventive eye care. Objective: To determine the ocular health status and ocular health seeking practices of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital workers towards common eye problems. Subjects and Methods: This study was a hospital based descriptive cross sectional study. A total of 370 participants were recruited using a systematic random sampling method. Using a structured questionnaire, participants were assessed on their awareness and knowledge of common eye problems, specifically cataract, glaucoma and refractive errors. At the end of the assessment, an ophthalmic examination was done to determine their ocular health status. Results of the study were analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 21. Test of statistical significance was with the chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test and logistic regression. Observed difference whose probability of not occurring by chance (p-value<0.05) was considered statistically significant.
