Abstract

AIM: This study was carried out to determine prevailing ocular conditions in pregnant women diagnosed with pregnancy induced hypertension at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital and to compare this with reported findings in available literatures. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A case control study of ocular findings in women with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) presenting to the Antenatal Care Unit of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt between 23rd March to 30th Nov 2012 and May15 to july15 2013 was carried out. A convenient sampling technique was used to select patients with pregnancy induced hypertension and normal pregnant women for control, who were matched for age and gestation (in trimester). The subjects were aged 17- 49 years (mean 30.99 ± 6.78 years). The systolic and diastolic pressure for PIH group ranges are 140 – 240 mmHg (mean of 163.05 ± 26.29) and 91 – 130 mmHg (mean of 101.95 ±9.96 mmHg) respectively. The PIH group was further categorized into preeclampsia and gestational hypertension. Detailed eye examination carried out on each PIH patient and control included visual acuity check, anterior segment examination, and dilated fundoscopy and slit lamp biomicroscopy with a +78D or +90D condensing lenses. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 16) was used to analyze the data. Test of significance was done; and level of significance set at p <0.05.
