Aim: To investigate ocular blood flow velocity in the ophthalmic artery (OA) and central retinal artery (CRA) using Colour Doppler imaging in Type 2 diabetic subjects and to compare the results with those in healthy non diabetic control subjects. Method: This was a comparative cross sectional study which included 50 diabetic patients without retinopathy (DM-R), 50 diabetic patients with retinopathy (DM+R) and 50 age matched non diabetic subjects forming the control group. Detailed ocular examination with intraocular pressure measurement were done and documented. Colour Doppler imaging was used to measure the peak systolic velocity (PSV, cm/s) and end-diastolic velocity (EDV, cm/s) and resistivity index (RI) of blood flow in the OA and CRA. Results were presented as tables, charts, means and standard deviations. Test of differences was done using the independent t-test and analysis of variance. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.
