Abstract

Aim: To establish a normative data of fetal umbilical, middle cerebral and maternal uterine arteries Doppler waveform indices (Pulsatility Index, Resistance Index, and Systolic: Diastolic ratio) in uncomplicated pregnancies. Subjects and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study involving 420 pregnant women, who attended the antenatal booking clinic at Central Hospital, Benin City were recruited between 20 and 40 weeks of gestation. Each fetus was measured only once for the purpose of this study. Using Triplex Doppler Colour ultrasound machine with a 3.5MHz trans-abdominal curvilinear probe, the systolic/diastolic ratio (S/D ratio), resistance index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI) of fetal umbilical, middle cerebral and maternal uterine arteries were measured. The fetal middle cerebral artery to umbilical artery resistance index ratio was determined. Regression equations were used to categorize reference ranges and percentile fitted normograms were obtained for all parameters.
