The aim of this study was to establish intraracial variations amongst Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria point out asymmetry of nose forms and determine if any correlation exists between sex, height and nasal parameters. The study group comprised 400 adult Igbos aged 18-65years.Males were 249(62.3%) and females 151(37.8%).They were spread across the five South Eastern states of Nigeria thus; Abia-28(7.0%), Anambra-126(31.5%), Ebonyi25(6.3%), Enugu-170(42.5%) and Imo-51(12.8%).They were chosen by simple random and proportionate sampling methods. Measurements were taken using landmarks identified by Farkas. The Topinard system of measuring the inclination of medial longitudinal axis for the nose type was used. Nose types IV and V were the commonest. Nose type IV had 183 individuals (45.8%), males were 113(45.5%) and females 70(46.4%). Individual with nose type V were 119(27.3%) out of which males were 70(28.1%) and females 29(19.2%).These values cut across sex and state of origin. Notable was the absence of dorsal hump, and mild asymmetry of nostril height. There was a weak correlation between the height and nasal parameters. The intra racial variation provides a guideline for rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction bearing in mind ethnic differences. However, individualized options are still paramount for the best outcome. Further studies with regards to geriatric and paediatric age group is required to rule out/establish the effect of growth on nasal parameters.
