Background: The Hausa/Fulani tribe which is one of the major tribes in Nigeria has few documented norms on nose parameters. Objectives: This study seeks to establish norms of nose parameters among the Hausa/Fulani group, and to determine any intra racial and inter gender differences in these parameters. Methods: The study is a prospective study carried out at 3 Outpatient clinics of Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Nigeria. Subjects were selected by the convenience sampling technique. The nose parameters measured were the nose height, nose width, columella length, columella width, nose tip protrusion, nostril type and the presence of a dorsal hump. All measurements were carried out using standard landmarks as reviewed by Farkas. Results: The subjects consisted of 405 patients from 18 to 70 years of age, 133(32.8%) were males and 272(67.2%) were females. The average nose length and nose width were 42.9±3.8 mm and 38.3±3.1 mm respectively. There were significant gender differences in the nose height, nose width and columella length (P < 0.05). Correlations existed in the linear nose parameters. The nostril types cut across types II to VII, with typesV(35.3%) and III(21.5%) being the most common: types II(1.5%)and VII (5.4%) were the least common. No significant sex difference existed in the distribution of the nostril types (P>0.05). A total of 27 subjects (6.7%) had a dorsal hump. There was a significant relationship between sex and the presence of a dorsal hump (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The Hausa/Fulani group has peculiar nose parameters and shares some with other races. There exist several intra racial variations in the nose parameters which require that the Hausa/ Fulani patient seeking nose surgery should be individualized.
